    Description

An original leather Royal Navy cordite charge carrier constructed of Leather, cork and canvas. One of the best condition items of it's kind. These were used by the Royal Navy prior to, during and after WW1, to carry the cordite charges for Naval guns. Explosive charges were placed into these containers before they left the magazines. The Clarkson's Cases then rode up the hoists to the guns where the charges were removed only when it was time to load them into the breech. The front bears a coloured coat of arms of the United Kingdom - a shield representing Ireland, England and Scotland. The shield is encompassed by the Garter circlet inscribed with “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE” (Shame on he who thinks evil) and the motto “DIE ET MON DROIT” (God and my right). It measures 28" high with a 7" diameter. The bottom is impressed 'No.56 VI' and 'BH&G Ltd. which stands for Barrow, Hepburn & Gale, a company that still exists and retains royal warrants for the creation and repair of dispatch boxes.
